The Origins of the Sogdians

Описание к видео The Origins of the Sogdians

In this video, I take a look at the genetic origins of the Sogdians based on unpublished samples from an upcoming study on the ethnogenesis of Turkic populations. Genetically, the Sogdians were primarily derived from the indigenous population of the Bactria-Margiana Archaelogical Complex, also known as the BMAC or Oxus culture. This indigenous Central Asian element is genetically closest to Neolithic Iranian Farmers and Caucasian Hunter Gatherers. The BMAC component, based on the leaked results from the study, formed more than 50% of the Sogdian genome, followed by the Sintashta or Proto-Indo-Iranian component, which made up around 30% of the Sogdian genome. Thus, the Sogdians were largely a BMACized population. In fact, other closely related populations to the Sogdians, such as the Kangju and Late Sakas from Kazakhstan, also had significant amounts of BMAC ancestry, alongside their descent from a Proto-Indo-Iranian or Sintashta source. Overall, these results also refute the claims made by both Jason Reza Jorjani and Survive the Jive that the Sogdians were a predominantly Nordic European population, with little to no genetic influences from the indigenous BMAC population.
