2009 GMC Acadia No Start/No Crank - Alternator Replacement

The owner contacted me and asked "Can you replace my starter?"
I said "I sure can, but what makes you think you need a starter?"
The owner stated that she went out to start her Acadia one morning, and it wouldn't do anything but make a loud click every time she pushed the Start/On button. At first it even seemed to want try to start, but failed. The owner didn't know what to do, short of having it towed, so it sat for a few months. Over the next several attempts, including the use of jumper cables, it just didn't seem to crank. At this point they were convinced that the AGM battery had given up the ghost. A few weeks later, a new AGM battery was installed. (Both battery cable clamps had inadvertently been incorrectly tightened, and consequently broken.) After a few more attempts to get the Acadia to start, and only getting a loud click, and even the occasional "chug", the only logical thing left was to replace the faulty starter....
Well... not really.
Not when the voltage between the vehicle body and engine block is 6 volts during a crank! A Jump Start Positive (+) Post is provided under the hood, and the voltage between that and engine block would drop to almost 10 volts during a crank attempt (with a jump pack on the actual battery.) Something is definitely wrong.

I do most, if not all repairs, with tools that I carry around in my overloaded 1997 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. I perform "On-Site" braking and suspension repairs, amongst other diagnostics and services. My tools consist mostly of Craftsman, a few Stanley, Snap-On, Husky, Pittsburgh, and S&K tools. Scan tools include hand held Actrons, DVOMs, and test lights. I also currently use a Zurich ZR Pro, for advanced and bidirectional diagnostics as well as a Snap-On Verus Pro, for more detailed diagnostics. I'm always expanding my collection, based on need and convenience.
