Erik Hægstad was born in a small village called Fiskum, about 80km southeast of Oslo, the capital of Norway. Since his childhood, his dream was to become a professional cyclist and he knew that he should move to a place where he could train with other riders.
When he was only fifteen years old, he made the decision to move to Lillehammer, more than 200km far from his home, to join a high-performance center with very few places available. In Lillehammer, he was able to finish his studies while he was training at the highest level with other riders from all over the country.
Last year he managed to win his first absolute National Championship and also had good results in the World Cup season. These achievements, together with a great projection, led him to sign for the KMC Orbea Team, which gave some extra motivation to prepare for 2022.
Unfortunately, an injury during the pre-season followed by a few weeks without training due to COVID, has put a strain on his way to start the year.
