Joe Azzopardi has loved trucks since he was a kid, and started driving trucks as soon as he could get his licence when he was 19, back in the mid-1980s. He first started in the truck transport industry driving septic tanks out of Quakers Hill for Joe Pace in an International T-Line, before moving on to driving for the Vellas. But, in 1988, when he decided to go into business for himself, he bought his first Atkinson, followed by his first Kenworth W Model, which was an ex-Hexham Haulage vehicle. The truck on display at the Klarendon Klassic is his second W Model, which he bought about 25 years ago from Chris Morris who used it to work for Boral, and Joe has rebuilt over the years from front to back, the way he wanted it, including changing the rails, changing out the original 13-speed for an 18-speed Roadranger, putting a box on it and changing the colour scheme to blue from yellow. It has a Keith bullbar, a big Cam 400 engine under the hood (which was in the truck when Joe bought it) it runs Rockwell diffs on 6-rod suspension. Joe has also re-trimmed the interior. The only completely original part still left on the truck is the cab.
These days, Joe carts bulk mulch and landscape supplies out of Central West NSW back into Sydney using a cab-over, though he would prefer the W as his daily drive, but he only uses it now and then when he needs to. He has built it how he likes it, to his specifications and colour scheme, and it has everything he wants in a truck.
