WALLS of DUBROVNIK | An Epic Walk Above the OLD TOWN

DUBROVNIK, CROATIA: A fascinating tour along the fortified Dubrovnik walls as well as learning about the various wars that have affected this area. Ended the day at a Ana Rucner concert in the old town.

The walls of Dubrovnik are undoubtedly what draws the tourists into Dubrovnik - they’re currently the city’s most popular tourist attraction and a magnificent way to spend half a day. I decided to join a tour group to walk around the entire wall network and learn a little about the history and purpose. The walking tour focused exclusively on the walls as well as some of the armed conflicts that have been fought in and around Dubrovnik - including the Croatian war of 1991.

I learned about the Yugoslav shelling and why so many of the old buildings have new roofs. Standing in one of the many towers I tried to relate to how it must have felt back then to see warships gathering in the sea and hearing the sound of bombs dropping throughout the old town.

The walls offer incredible views all around including down on the harbour area, over towards Lokrum Island, out in the direction of the mountains and all across the old town of Dubrovnik. Perhaps the most spectacular place is the view from the Minčeta Tower which I believe is the highest point in the defensive walls.

I stayed until it got dark and then the walls were closed due to limited lighting. In the evening I stumbled upon an Ana Rucner Concert outside the Rector's Palace in Dubrovnik old town - what a setting to see the lights flashing and hear her cello booming.
