India’s waste management poses a significant challenge to sustainable development, exacerbated by rapid urbanization and a growing population of 1.43 billion. The country generates approximately 62 million tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) annually, but only 43 million tonnes are collected, with just 12 million undergoing scientific processing. A substantial 31 million tonnes end up in landfills or remain untreated, causing environmental degradation and health risks. The composition of MSW is diverse, with organic waste (40-60%), recyclables (20-30%), and inert materials (10-20%) being the primary components.
India also faces challenges with plastic, e-waste, biomedical, and hazardous waste. Urban planning is vital to address these issues, with the need for segregated waste collection systems, recycling centres, and waste-to-energy plants. Government initiatives like the Swachh Bharat Mission are crucial in improving waste management practices.
Rural areas also face waste management difficulties, but decentralized solutions such as composting and biogas generation can help manage organic waste while providing renewable energy and improving soil quality. The urban-rural divide in waste generation and infrastructure remains a key challenge. Urban areas have better waste collection and recycling systems, while rural areas lack infrastructure.
India’s waste management market is expected to reach $12.7 billion by 2025, creating 1.7 million jobs. The recycling sector is projected to grow at 20% annually. Financially, waste management relies on municipal taxes, user fees, and revenue from recyclables. Future trends include AI for sorting, biodegradable alternatives, decentralized systems, and waste trading platforms, promoting a circular economy and more sustainable practices.
