In a WGAL exclusive, Tasmin Mahfuz meets with WellSpan York Hospital's trauma team, Chief Trauma Surgeon Dr. Josh Hazelton, Emergency Department Nurse Kim Godfrey and Trauma Surgical ICU Nurse Lindsay Ritchie, who share their work and experience treating a critically injured officer on September 17th.

York County Sheriff's Deputy Lt. David Godfrey was one of 5 law enforcement officers shot. Three officers, Detective Sgt. Cody Becker, Detective Isaiah Emenheiser, and Detective Mark Baker of the Northern York County Regional Police Department, killed in action while serving an arrest warrant.

Ritchie shared the emotional impact of treating an officer, especially given her personal connection to first responders. "I've cried. I've shed tears. I've, you know, you feel all the feels knowing that it could have been him," she said. "It doesn't help that the frequency has happened this year. And that's what makes it so hard."

Dr. Hazelton said the key lesson from a recent incident is the readiness of their team, with advancements helping save lives before patients reach the trauma bay.

Police officers and EMS personnel can now apply tourniquets and stabilizers to victims, and medics have the capability to carry and transfuse blood, providing crucial minutes for surgeons.

These advancements are credited with saving Lt. David Godfrey's life.
