NES controller circuit with 4021 https://www.allaboutcircuits.com/proj...

There is no project schematic since it was just stitched together.
The 4021 controller circuit from the allaboutcircuits.com link was assembled on a breadboard. The latch/data/clock as well as +5V as GND from that circuit were wired to a spare NES plug/cable to plug into the NES.
The 8 button inputs to the 4021 were wired to 8 digital outputs on the Arduino Nano (see the sketch for the pins used).
Then the Nano has a latch/clock/data set of pins that are used to connect to a NES controller using the 7 pin connector breakout board. That breakout board also has +5v/GND from the Nano to power the NES controller.
The GND from the Nano and from the 4021 circuits must be common.
The Nano's 5v power can come from the NES +5v supply on the 4021 circuit or if that gives problems, the Nano can have its own separate USB or other 5V power source.
