WHO South-East Asia was certified polio free in 2014. However, challenges persist as wild poliovirus type 1 continues to circulate in two countries. Outbreaks of circulating vaccine-derived polioviruses have been reported in multiple regions, including ours. These threats remind us that unless polio us eradicated everywhere, it remains a risk everywhere. Our path forward should be to not only sustain polio-free status, but also to strengthen immunization systems and public health resilience. We are closer than ever to ending polio. However, ‘almost there’ is not the same as ‘done.’ Let’s finish the job, with urgency and unity, Dr Catharina Boehme, Officer-in-Charge, WHO South-East Asia, said in her virtual addressed to the 18th Meeting of the Regional Certification Commission for Poliomyelitis Eradication (SEA-RCCPE).
