What's the difference between porpoises and dolphins? Is there a difference? Many people use these terms interchangeably but they are entirely different families of animals. Even though porpoises are somewhat similar in appearance to dolphins, they are more closely related to narwhals and belugas than to the true dolphins. There are eight species of porpoise and all are among the smallest cetaceans (or toothed whales). Porpoises have blunt faces or rostrums, spade shaped teeth, and triangular dorsal fins. If you see a porpoise in the wild, you'll probably only see their dorsal fin because they are not as acrobatic as dolphins. On the other hand, dolphins are larger than porpoises, their bodies are generally sleeker and more streamlined, they typically have longer beaks or rostrums, their dorsal fins are more crescent shaped, and they have conical teeth. There are some variations, however, many of the larger species of dolphins like orcas, pilot whales, and melon-headed whales don't have the pronounced rostrums like most dolphins. There is also a much greater size difference between various dolphin species!
