Via Rosse (6a+)_San Vito lo Capo.wmv

The Route 'Via Rosse' is located in Sector 'Campeggio Salinella' on the coastal outskirts of town 'San Vito lo Capo' approx. 100km from Palermo in North West of Sicily. The difficulty of route is 6a+ and is 26m in length. The rock quality in this sector is not sharp as compared to other sectors in this region. The route has a beautiful climbing line with good footholds to relax your hands. My partner was Matthias Strauß and the person who helped with the camera was Robert Schönleber.

The nearest place to stay is a camping site 'El Bahira'. The cliffs are located just behind camp site. A 100m walk will take you to the sector El Bahira and you can either walk left or right for a couple of km to find endless routes to climb. There are many 30m+ routes also and it is better to take atleast 60m or 70 rope to enjoy the lengthy routes. February and March are offseason in camp site and it is easy to find apartment or mobile home for week or so. In summer there is a huge rush (mostly because access to the sea) and the booking runs in advance of an year or so. Because of high temperatures (+40°C) during the day in summers there are flood lights installed in sector 'El Bahira' so that you can climb in night when temps. are low. Unfortunately the lights were not working when we went at the end of February.

These sectors are relatively new and were first bolted somewhere around 2006 and since then people have contributed and bolted more routes. There is still huge potential of many more routes. The Cliffs runs for kilometers along the coast line and it is an amazing experience to climb with sea in your background.
