With six years of experience under her belt, Linda Kotzur is acutely aware of the immense responsibility that comes with flying. Even minor errors can have significant consequences, particularly when visibility is compromised. Pilots like Kotzur, who often fly under Visual Flight Rules (VFR), rely heavily on clear conditions to maintain distances from clouds and other aircraft.

🛫 AR-riving at new heights in HUDs 🛫

To make sure flying becomes even safer, she believes head-up displays in airplanes should include AR. Unlike standard displays that are fixed within the cockpit, holographic HUDs use the windshield to project data, with the information appearing to float before the pilot. Kotzur tested one such airplane head-up display from ZEISS and she says it could completely change how she flies. The HUD is particularly compact, meaning cockpit augmented reality could be available in all forms of aircraft, from commercial jets to smaller private planes in the future.
