So, the Highlander Hybrid has been around since 2020 in this fourth-generation form. It’s got the same hybrid powertrain as the RAV4 Hybrid but with a bit more juice to handle the added weight. In tests, it went from 0 to 60 mph in 8.2 seconds. That’s pretty impressive for a three-row SUV, especially when you consider how much more fuel-efficient it is compared to some V6 rivals.
Now, let’s talk about how it drives. Around turns, the Highlander Hybrid is surprisingly composed. It might not be as sporty as the Ford Explorer Hybrid, but for a three-row SUV, handling isn’t the top priority. What matters more is how easy it is to drive, and the Highlander Hybrid nails it. The power delivery is smooth and responsive, and the brakes are nice and predictable, without that grabby feel some hybrids have.
How comfortable is it? The ride quality is top-notch. It smooths over most road imperfections and stays controlled even at higher speeds. The front seats are wide and comfortable, great for long drives, and the second-row captain’s chairs are almost as comfy. However, the third row is a bit of a letdown with thin padding, low seat cushions, and limited legroom, making it tough for adults.
Let’s move inside. The first and second rows offer plenty of space, but the third row is pretty tight compared to other midsize SUVs. If you plan on using the third row regularly, make sure it meets your needs.
Toyota has made strides in tech, though there are still some minor drawbacks. The optional 12.3-inch touchscreen is huge and responsive, but it’s prone to reflections and smudges. Our Platinum tester had five USB ports for the first and second rows, but none for the third row.
All Highlanders come with a comprehensive suite of advanced driver aids. We appreciate the natural operation of the adaptive cruise control, but the lane departure warning can be a bit too sensitive, and the lane centering isn’t very effective at highway speeds.
Cargo space is a mixed bag. There are 16 cubic feet behind the third row, which is less than the Ford Explorer. Fold down the third row, and you get 48.4 cubic feet, which is pretty good. There’s decent space for your stuff, with useful shelves across the dash. One quirk: if you’re using the wireless charging pad, you have to remove your phone to access the space beneath.
Toyota hasn’t released official info on the 2025 Highlander Hybrid yet, but we expect it to be similar to the 2024 model. If you’re looking to buy, we recommend the midrange XLE trim. It offers a good mix of features like heated front seats, a hands-free liftgate, wireless phone charging, and a sunroof.
