Gerunds: add -ING to a verb to use the word as a noun.

Nouns can be people, places, things, ideas, or activities. Many activities end with -ing and look like verbs, although they are used as nouns. We call this form GERUNDS.

Think of -ing as one of those suffixes that transforms a word into a different part of speech.

Gerunds retain most of the properties of verbs (like they can have objects, adverbs, and prepositional phrases) while also holding the properties of nouns (the can be specified by determiners or modified by adjectives, and the can act on verbs or be acted upon by verbs).
