If you’ve been watching our Coast Series, you’ll know we’re as far as The Wash on the east coast where we ended that leg and returned home. We’ve already gone back and completed the rest of the east coast and much of the West Coast too. Rejoin us next Friday as we pick it up again from Skegness.

In the meantime, enjoy the ride out we had this week on the only sunny day! We’ve not ventured far from home. Hopefully, like us you’ll enjoy seeing what our local area has to offer. We’ll take you to some well known sights as well as some less popularised places. We’ll end up at an attraction that’s certainly a bit different but has a dark history so be warned! But first we need to get there - so sit back and enjoy the ride.

Today, we’re off to Shepton Mallet Prison but on our way we’ll take you on a little tour of Somerset, over the Mendip Hills, visiting some of our favourite places including Banwell, Winscombe, Axbridge, Cheddar Gorge, Priddy, Ebbor Gorge and Wells.

Stick around to the end for a fascinating insight to Shepton Mallet Prison. It’s the oldest prion in the UK and only closed in 2013. You can see where the executions took place.

In World War Two it was a military prison. 18 American servicemen were executed here, 16 were hanged and two were shot.

We’ll also have a short ride around this interesting but overlooked historic town.

Who needs a theme park when you have places like Banwell, Axbridge, Cheddar, Priddy, Wells and even Shepton Mallet on your doorstep. Sometimes overlooked in preference of places like Bath, Bristol and Salisbury, there are lots of towns and villages in Great Britain like this. We scratched the surface of these gems today and really encourage you to visit for yourself, park up and walk around to take in the history and atmosphere for yourself.
