Furfura Sharif - It is one of the predominant Muslim pilgrimage sites of Bengal. It is located in Jangipara, Hooghly district. Thousands of visitors come every year to visit the place. Howrah to Furfura Sharif distance is 28km and Sealdah is 43km. The site attracts large number of pilgrims during the Pir mela or fair.

History –
It is a holy place for Muslims. The mosque is built by Muqlish Khan in 1375. The most important place to visit is the Mazaar Sharif (Tomb) of Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique(Rh) and his five sons, popularly known as the ‘Panch Huzur Keblah’.

It is said that the Bagdi king who ruled here was defeated by Hazrat Shah Kabir Halibi and Hazrat Karamuddin. Unfortunately both of them were killed in the battle. Here, their tombs are revered to this day by both Hindus and Muslims.

The founder of Furfura Sharif, Sufi Saint Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (Rh) was not only a religious preacher but also Religious Reformer of an era.

He was born in 1845 in Furfura-Sharif. He devoted his life in social work to abate social evils. He was the founder of many charitable institutes, orphanages and health center.
He was also a educationist who realized that it is through education he can free the society from all kind of evils. So he founded several madrasas, schools and learning centers.
He also encouraged women education by establishing a girl’s school. He used to say “A writer’s pen was more divine than hundred martyrs”. He patronized many Islamic journals and newspapers; one of them was a weekly newspaper in Bengali “MUSLIM HITAISHI”. He was a great patriot and was involved in the freedom struggle of India.

He had ardent disciples all over West Bengal, Assam, Bihar & Bangladesh and of all religion. In 17th March, 1939 he passed away leaving behind his five sons who were well versed in Islamic Theology with a mission-“to serve the people”. After the demises of his five sons, his is still being carried by his grandsons and devoted followers.

By train – The nearest railway station to Furfura Sharif is Balarambati, in Howrah cord line. The trains run on regular basis. Balarambati to Furfura sharif distance is 14.5km.
By road – Buses are available from Kolkata, Arambagh, Bishnupur and Bankura. One has to get down at Seakhala. From there plenty of vans are available to reach the place.
