Unified Diagnostic Services (UDS) are the common interface to configure ECUs, for instance, in the automotive industry. While production units and after-market tools need access to certain services, this access should be restricted. Currently, this is typically achieved with the UDS security access (service 0x27) and custom extensions. Since 2020 the UDS standard ISO 14229 offers a new authentication mechanism that is backed by modern cryptography and eliminates the drawbacks of the older security access, i.e., the authentication service 0x29. In this video, we talk about the differences of the prevalent security access and the new authentication service. Thereby, we highlight the benefits and state the challenges in adopting this new standard.
