Celebrities and influencers who promote "questionable" products or schemes could be investigated under the Penal Code as accomplices to a crime.

Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf warned celebrities and influencers to conduct thorough due diligence before endorsing any product or service.

Speaking to the New Straits Times, Ramli advised celebrities and influencers to thoroughly check a product or service before endorsing it.

He added that celebrities could face legal action if found to be complicit in luring the public to illegal activities, fraudulent schemes or promoting dubious products.

Several celebrities and public figures are being investigated by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission over their involvement with a financial consultancy firm that colluded with local bank officials to deceive borrowers through overlapping loans.

These celebrities were reportedly paid between RM150,000 and RM400,000 for one to two years as brand ambassadors.
