Yi Sun-shin (Yi Sun-sin) 이순신 was a famous general and admiral during the Korean Joseon Dynasty 조선. He’s especially remembered for his victories against the Japanese navy during the Imjin War 임진왜란, 文禄の役 which took place between 1592 and 1598. Yi Sun-shin fought in at least 23 recorded naval engagements against Japanese forces. He was beset by political intrigues and rivalry throughout his life but that didn’t stop him from becoming the most celebrated person in Korean history.

In this episode, I will look at his beginnings from defending the northern border of Joseon against Jurchen 여진 invasions to then becoming an admiral of the Joseon navy. I will talk about the beginning of the Imjin war initiated by Toyotomi Hideyoshi 豊臣秀吉, the second unifier of Japan. His original plan was to invade Ming China with the help of Joseon. Since Joseon was a vassal of Ming and had a good relationship with Ming, Toyotomi’s plan wasn’t going to work at all. He decided to attack Joseon in 1592.

During the war, Yi Sun-shin had turtle ships built, geobukseon 거북선. They were essential in winning many battles for Joseon. I will discuss how they were made and how they were used. I will also talk about the ships used by the Japanese during this war.

In this video, I will discuss Yi Sun-shin’s participation in the battles of Okpo 옥포 해전 and Sacheon 사천 해전.
