In this video, we'll show you 8 exercises for beginner Goalkeepers progressing from technical footwork to shot stopping and diving.

Exercise 1: We start off with some basic technical footwork. Shuffle side to side playing one touch passes back to the servers. Here you want to focus on maintaining good balance when moving side to side and playing clean one touch passes on the ground back to feet.

Exercise 2: Keep the same set-up but utilize only 1 ball. While moving side to side, play a one touch pass across to your partner. Again, keep good balance when moving and always be aware of where the next target is.

Exercise 3: Receive a back pass then take two touches to play the ball to an outside player. Focus on taking a good first touch going in the direction of your target. Be sure to communicate and give information as you pass to the outside player, then check back and scan the field prior to receiving.

Exercise 4: Here we begin working on dealing with some ground balls. In this drill, shuffle side to side while scooping the ball into your chest. It’s important to keep both hands together to create a larger surface when scooping the ball. Always focus on keeping your body behind the ball when moving side to side.

Exercise 5: In this drill we progress to working on scooping aerial balls. Start on the post facing the outside, then quickly turn and get your body set to scoop the ball into your chest. Focus on keeping your body balanced when turning and using your forearms to scoop and secure the ball into your chest.

Exercise 6: Keep the same set-up, but now work on catching the ball with your hands. When catching, make sure your hands are placed in a triangle position with your thumbs facing each other and your index fingers up and around the ball. Also make sure your hands are extended out a bit and not too close to your body.

Exercise 7: Here we begin to work on some basic diving. Begin by getting your body set in a slightly low stance, then dive to the side. Make sure that you always take a step to the side prior to diving on the ground. Land on the side of your body and never your stomach, elbows or knees. Also, be sure to keep one hand behind and the other hand on top of the ball when catching.

Exercise 8: In this final exercise, we start with some quick agility work then dive across the goal to make a save. Quickly get up and save a second ball by securing it to your chest. Here you want to focus on good footwork while simultaneously keeping your attention on the ball. When getting across the goal, shuffle quickly and take a long step prior to diving. After the first save, recover to your feet quickly for the second one.
