Marylee Nunley: A Personal Journey to Advocacy
Marylee Nunley’s path to becoming a leading advocate for stroke survivors and their families began with her own family’s experience. Over two decades ago, her husband John suffered a stroke, leaving him with significant aphasia and other challenges. As a caregiver, Marylee quickly realized the profound need for ongoing support, connection, and respite—not just for survivors, but for those who care for them. Inspired by her earlier involvement in camps for children with cystic fibrosis (started in memory of her nephew), she envisioned a similar retreat for stroke survivors and caregivers. This vision became the foundation for what is now known as the Retreat & Refresh Stroke Camp.
Retreat & Refresh Stroke Camp: A Unique Support Model
Founded in 2004, Retreat & Refresh Stroke Camp offers weekend retreats designed to foster education, relaxation, socialization, and peer support for stroke survivors and their caregivers. Unlike traditional support groups that meet briefly and infrequently, Stroke Camp provides an immersive, three-day experience. Activities include discussion groups, crafts, music therapy (including drum circles and sing-alongs), pampering sessions, and adaptive outdoor adventures like rock climbing or canoeing, depending on the venue. The camps are intentionally kept small—typically 35 to 55 participants—to ensure a supportive, intimate environment where everyone can connect meaningfully.
A key aspect of the camp’s success is its volunteer network, often including therapists, nurses, and other professionals from sponsoring hospitals or rehab centers. Volunteers assist with everything from meal service to crafts, ensuring both survivors and caregivers can relax and enjoy the experience. Importantly, the camp maintains a strong commitment to affordability, with a modest fee that covers all expenses and a scholarship fund to ensure no one is turned away for financial reasons.
United Stroke Alliance: Expanding the Mission
In 2008, the organization behind Stroke Camp formalized as a nonprofit—now known as United Stroke Alliance. This allowed them to expand their reach and partner with hospitals, rehab centers, and community organizations across the country. As of 2024, United Stroke Alliance hosts nearly 30 camps annually in over 20 states, with a flexible model that brings the camp experience to communities nationwide.
United Stroke Alliance’s mission extends beyond the camp weekends. The organization also provides educational resources, advocacy, and outreach to raise awareness about stroke prevention and recovery.
