this is my koi ponds filter that I built and designed a few years back it's a vortex system, the first chamber is filled with brushes, the second chamber is filled with bio-balls the third chamber is K2-media with vigorous aeration too create a moving media chamber and finally the last chamber is charcoal and crushed coral. there is actually crushed coral on the bottom of each chamber as well as the bottom of the pond to bring it up to the preferred pH level and it holds there.
