I like to incorporate quick training sessions (less than 5 minutes) with my dogs, multiple times throughout the day/evening.

Studies have shown that dogs like humans learn most effectively from short sessions as this helps them to remain motivated and in an optimally aroused state. In this video I show how you can conduct a quick training game to improve your dogs impulse control. Impulse control is a vital skill for your dog not only in everyday home life, dog sports events but for those with a reactive dog, such exercises are critical. It requires the dog to function when in a high arousal state in an environment in which you can control. Quick & regular impulse control games in a controlled environment (such as your home) prepares your dog for situations that may arise when you're out on a walk or when you have visitors and they get over-excited. Whenever you ask the dog for behaviours in a high arousal environment (for e.g. egg whites in bowl or favourite toy) you're building the dogs ability to function when excited - the training can then progress to outside your home (backyard, front yard etc) where your dog will be more challenged by this exercise. Building layers is key in dog training - follow this advice and you will be in your way to a fulfilling relationship with your dog. This exercise also teaches the dog that reinforcement (good things) come through you as a result of the good choices that the dog makes - this will be of great benefit for building the foundations of distraction training.
