Did you know that in the books Saruman never dies at Isengard the way he does in Peter Jackson’s movies? In the films, Saruman is stabbed by Wormtongue and falls from Orthanc, impaled on a wheel. But in Tolkien’s text, Saruman survives the fall of Isengard, flees into exile, and takes control of the Shire in the Scouring. Only when the hobbits return does Wormtongue finally kill him—ending the life of the once-great wizard in Hobbiton itself.

This major change removes one of Tolkien’s most powerful messages: that evil does not end with Sauron’s fall, but lingers even in the Shire.
