To rehab a shower, you'll find that a new drain is important. Here we show how to remove a cast iron drain which sat in a shower pan with a mortar base. Cast iron drains are common in older houses. This house is about 60 years old and the shower drain was finally having issues. So before removing the pan, we decided to chisel out the tile around the shower drain.

The shower drain base is a cast iron base initially attached with wing or thumb screws. Inside the cast base and around the drain pipe was a fiber / rope gasket. Above that and on top of the drain flange was a lead seal which was chiseled away.
