This video traces the history of liquid-fuel rockets. Chapter 1 of John D. Clark’s Ignition!: An Informal History of Liquid Rocket Propellants was used as the primary source.

December 1903, humanity's first break from ground to sky occurred in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. The Wright brothers flew the first powered airplane 120 feet into the air.
But long before the development of airplanes, 1820 and 1840, Michael Faraday was attempting to liquefy the familiar gases by cooling and pressurizing them. Faraday could achieve to liquify chlorine, ammonia, carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide. Although he may not have realized it, he was laying the foundation for liquid-fueled rockets.
