Favorite Books For Struggling Readers, Reluctant Readers, Beginning Readers | Homeschooling Struggling Readers

Trying to find books your beginning, reluctant, or struggling reader not only WANTS to read but also that they are ABLE to read sometimes feels impossible.

Today I’m sharing some of the BEST beginning readers and chapter books that have High Interest and Low Reading ability required for your elementary-age student. (You might have heard these called Hi-Lo reading books)

If your child is too old to enjoy Bob books or phonics readers, but they still aren’t able to read advanced chapter books or other typical “on-grade” options, this is the video for you! Not only do I share some of the book titles my own homeschool kids have enjoyed, but I also give some tips for keeping the joy of reading in your home, even with a kid that doesn’t like to read with their eyes.

💗New here? I'm Amy. My husband, John, and I are 2nd-generation homeschoolers to five children from 9 to 19 years old, including a homeschool graduate! We adventure together in NC where we pursue a restfully-classical education filled with books, conversation, and not-so-occasional nerdiness. If you hang out with me for any length of time you’ll quickly learn that I love overflowing book stacks, giant mugs of coffee, beautiful memory work, and silly memes.

I encourage homeschoolers through my “Homeschool Conversations with Humility and Doxology” podcast, HumilityandDoxology channel here on YouTube, and at HumilityandDoxology.com.

I believe that the best education is the one that leads to a humble view of one’s self and a glorified view of the beauty of God. I encourage homeschooling mamas that faithful consistency and wonder-filled exploration are not mutually exclusive. Our family’s homeschool prioritizes relationships over checklists, and we believe that beautiful words are more valuable to memorize than inventories of facts. Ultimately, I'm convinced that Gospel truth alone saves us from endlessly striving and the fear, worry, and anxiety of wondering if we (and our homeschools) are enough.
