📘 How I'm Explaining the Topic:

I will begin by explaining the strength of the Supreme Court as given under Article 124(1) of the Indian Constitution — this talks about how many judges can be there in the Supreme Court, including the Chief Justice of India.

Then, I will move on to the appointment procedure of Supreme Court judges and how it has evolved over time.

In this part, I’ll highlight the period before 1993, where there was executive interference in the appointment of judges — especially the Chief Justice of India and the judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts.

To show how deep this interference was, I will explain:

The 14th Law Commission Report,
The appointment of Justice A.N. Ray as Chief Justice bypassing three senior-most judges,
And how Justice M.H. Beg was appointed as CJI over Justice H.R. Khanna, even after Justice Khanna’s historic dissent in the ADM Jabalpur case.
After that, I will cover the key constitutional cases that shaped the current system:

First Judges Case – S.P. Gupta v. Union of India, AIR 1982 SC 149
➤ Held that the President is not bound by the CJI's recommendation.
Subhash Sharma v. Union of India, (1991) Supp (1) SCC 574
➤ A crucial case that criticized executive overreach and emphasized the importance of the judiciary’s primacy.
Third Judges Case – In Re: Special Reference No. 1 of 1998, (1998) 7 SCC 739
➤ Established the Collegium System through an advisory opinion under Article 143.
NJAC Verdict – Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association v. Union of India, (2016) 5 SCC 1
➤ Struck down the 99th Constitutional Amendment and NJAC Act as unconstitutional and reaffirmed the independence of the judiciary.
