The battery is completely optional. These operate as regular headphones just fine with the switch in the off position or even no battery installed.

When my environment gets too distracting then I flip the power switch to the "on" position in order to cancel out the background noise (a single AAA battery is required for this feature). I love these headphones btw.

The single AAA battery is located in the right ear piece (the right ear piece has the power switch). The left ear piece does not open. The left ear piece doest not contain any batteries.

It had been so long since originally installing the battery that I couldn't remember how to access the battery compartment. I found my answer in a 19 minute video so I decided to make a short and to the point video. Enjoy.
