Saint Nicholas Church is a Romanian Orthodox church located in the historic district of Șcheii Brașovului, in what is now Brașov, and established in 1292. Starting in 1495, the church was rebuilt in stone by the locals, with the support of Vlad Călugărul, The Ruler Prince of Wallachia. Saint Nicholas Church was initially built in the Gothic style and redecorated later in Baroque architectural style.
The First Romanian School, located on the grounds St. Nicholas Church, is the first school on the territory of present-day Romania where Romanian language was used in teaching.
The building was built in 1495 and rebuilt in 1597, but the school started to function before the 15th century. The first Romanian-language classes were held here in 1583.
In the front of the church there is a statue of Coresi (also known as Diaconul Coresi), who was a Romanian editor of the sixteenth century. Between 1557 and 1583, Coresi published some of the earliest printed books in the Romanian language here, in Brașov, and hundreds of copies were distributed in all Romanian lands to facilitate the linguistic unity of the Romanian people.
Brașov is a city in southeastern Transylvania, Romania. Șcheii Brașovului is a district in Brașov, like a village inside the town made up of small houses with gardens built along narrow roads at the foot of the Tâmpa Mountain.
