Reel de Joseph Larade with Stephen Brown - Devon's Tune of the Day 077 at Lark Camp

Another fine tune with my friend Stephen Brown on guitar at Lark Camp! Dejah and I started playing this gorgeous and mysterious Cape Breton Acadian tune, "Reel de Joseph Larade", from the great Chéticamp singer Joseph Larade years ago and it's been awesome to see so many folks pick it up and learn it too! Wendy MacIsaac pointed out to me that this tune is also known as "Princess Royal" in Cape Breton and often played a bit faster. Ultimately it seems to come from an O'Carolan tune of the same name, "New Princess Royal", which is usually played in G minor. Maybe the classical elements of O'Carolan could partly explain how this tune sounds so unusual in Cape Breton, whether from Scottish or Acadian fiddlers. Either way, it's a gorgeous tune now, especially out under the redwoods!
