Kinship Concepts:

1. Lineage: Tracing descent through either the paternal or maternal line.
• Patrilineal: Descent traced through the father’s line.
• Matrilineal: Descent traced through the mother’s line.
2. Clan: A group of families with a common ancestor.
3. Affinal kin: Relatives by marriage.
4. Consanguineal kin: Blood relatives.
5. Fictive kin: Non-biological relationships that are considered familial (e.g., godparents).

Kinship Systems:

1. Unilineal Descent: Descent traced through one line only (either patrilineal or matrilineal).
2. Bilineal Descent: Descent traced through both the father’s and mother’s lines.
3. Ambilineal Descent: Descent that can be traced through either line, depending on the choice or circumstances.
4. Bilateral Descent: Descent traced equally through both parents.

Kinship Functions:

1. Socialization: Teaching cultural norms and values.
2. Identity and Status: Providing a sense of belonging and social position.
3. Economic Support: Sharing resources and providing financial support.
4. Emotional Support: Offering love, care, and emotional stability.

These kinship terms and concepts are foundational in understanding how societies organize family relationships, inheritance, and social roles.
