From the album ‘Harvest” Released January 1972

It was Neil Young's only U.S. No. 1 single.

The song, which features backup vocals by James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt, is one of a series of soft acoustic pieces which were written partly as a result of a back injury.

Recorded during the initial sessions for Harvest on February 6–8, 1971, at Quadrafonic Sound Studios in Nashville, Tennessee.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted Young twice: in 1995 as a solo artist and in 1997 as a member of Buffalo Springfield.

In 2000, Rolling Stone named him No. 34 on their list of the 100 greatest musical artists.

This song was recorded in just two takes. The musicians were not familiar with Young or the song, but knew how to play. This spontaneity created just the right feel for the track.

This style of recording, where top-tier studio musicians are asked to give total focus to a take with little instruction, is something Bob Dylan often did.

It's also a throwback to the analog days when tape (which was expensive) was rolling, making additional takes costly and cumbersome.

Bass-
Timothy Lee Drummond (April '40 – Jan '15) was an American session bassist.

He toured and recorded with many notable artists, including Conway Twitty, Bob Dylan, James Brown, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Miles Davis, B.B. King, Joe Cocker, Jewel, and many others.
