The structure of hair :-

Hair shaft

CUTICLE = Is the outermost layer of the hair. It consists of a single, overlapping layers of transparent, scale , similar way to the scales of fish with their free end pointing towards the trip of the hair.

CORTEX = About 80%of total weight comes from cortex. The elasticity , natural color and the unique protein structures located within the cortex. The changes involved in oxidation hair coloring , permanent waving and chemical hair relaxing take place within the cortex.

MEDULLA = is the innermost layer. It is composed of round cells. It is quite common for very fine and naturally blonde hair to entirely lack of medulla, only thick, coarse hair contains a medulla.

THE BONDS :-

3 Types of bonds :-

1. Hydrogen bond = is a physical side bond that is easily broken by water or heat . Athough individual hydrogen bonds are very weak, there are so many of them they account for about one third of the hair's overall strength.

2. Salt bond = is also a physical side bond, but it is broken by changes in ph. Salt bonds are easily broken by strong alkaline or acidic solutions and account for about one third of the hairs overall strength.

3. Di-sulfide bond = Disulfied bond is a chemical side bond. They are not broken by heat or water . Permanent waves and chemical hair relaxers changes the shape of hair by chemically changing the hair's disulfide bonds. This permanent relaxers break disulfide bonds, which are reformed by this neutralizers

Pigments - Hair has only two types of pigments: dark (eumelanin) and light (phaeomelanin). They blend together to make up the wide range of hair colors. Melanin is made up of specialized pigment cells called melanocytes. They position themselves at the openings on the skin's surface through which hair grows (follicles).
