Ratha Yatra, also known as the Chariot Festival, is one of the most significant and vibrant Hindu festivals, particularly celebrated in Puri, Odisha. It involves the grand procession of deities Jagannath (a form of Krishna), Balabhadra (his brother), and Subhadra (his sister) on massive chariots pulled by devotees. The festival is steeped in mythological and cultural significance.

According to Hindu mythology, Ratha Yatra commemorates the annual visit of Lord Jagannath to his birthplace, the Gundicha Temple, along with his siblings Balabhadra and Subhadra. The festival also symbolizes the journey of Lord Krishna from Gokul to Mathura.

The deities are carried from the sanctum of the Jagannath Temple to their respective chariots in a grand procession known as Pahandi Bije.

The Gajapati King of Puri sweeps the chariots with a golden broom, a ritual called Chhera Pahara, symbolizing humility and the idea that everyone is equal before the divine.

Devotees pull the chariots through the streets of Puri to the Gundicha Temple, which is about 3 kilometers away. The chariots are pulled with ropes by thousands of devotees amidst chants, music, and the sound of conch shells.

The deities stay at the Gundicha Temple for nine days. During this time, special rituals and offerings are made.

After the nine-day stay, the deities return to the Jagannath Temple in a similar procession called Bahuda Yatra. On their way back, they stop at the Mausi Maa Temple, dedicated to the goddess Ardhashini, to accept offerings of Poda Pitha, a special sweet.
