In Hinduism, Tilak is applied not only on the forehead but also on the neck, navel, back, and arms. It has great importance in Sanatan Dharma because by applying Tilak, the energy of the planets is balanced, and the mind remains calm and concentrated.

There are mainly 3 types of Tilak, Vaishnava Tilak, Shaiva Tilak, and Brahma Tilak.

Vaishnava Tilak is applied by such people, who are considered to be followers of Lord Vishnu or worship Lord Krishna, Lord Rama, Lord Narasimha, Vanam Dev, etc., incarnations of Lord Vishnu. Vaishnav Tilak is applied with yellow Gopi sandalwood.

Shaiv Tilak is applied by worshipers of Lord Shiva. Such people can be people associated with a virtuous household who worship Bholenath. They wear Tripund. Shaiv Tilak is black or red in color.

Brahma Tilak is usually applied by temple priests and Brahmins. At the same time, people belonging to the household who worship Brahma Dev also apply such Tilak. Brahma Tilak is applied with a white roll.

हिंदू धर्म में केवल माथे पर ही नहीं बल्कि कंठ,नाभि, पीठ और भुजाओं पर भी तिलक लगाए जाता हैं । इसका सनातन धर्म में बहुत महत्व हैं क्योंकि तिलक लगाने से ग्रहों की ऊर्जा संतुलित होती है मन शांत और एकाग्र रहता है ।

मुख्य तौर पर 3 तरह के तिलक होते हैं, वैष्णव तिलक, शैव तिलक और ब्रह्म तिलक ।

वैष्णव तिलक ऐसे लोग लगाते हैं, जो भगवान विष्णु के अनुयायी माने जाते हैं, या फिर भगवान विष्णु के अवतार श्रीकृष्ण, भगवान राम, भगवान नृसिंह, वानम देव आदि की पूजा करते हैं. वैष्णव तिलक पीले रंग के गोपी चंदन से लगाया जाता है.

शैव तिलक भगवान शिव के उपासक लगाते हैं. ऐसे लोग भोलेनाथ की पूजा-पाठ करने वाले सात्विक गृहस्थी से जुड़े लोग हो सकते हैं. ये त्रिपुंड धारण करते हैं. शैव तिलक काले या फिर लाल रंग का होता है.

ब्रह्म तिलक को आमतौर पर मंदिर के पुजारी और ब्राह्मण लगाते हैं । साथ ही ब्रह्म देव की पूजा करने वाले गृहस्थी से जुड़े लोग भी ऐसा तिलक लगाते हैं । ब्रह्म तिलक सफेद रंग की रोली से लगाया जाता है ।
