I am so excited to post this Episode! This has been a work in process over the last 4 months. I honestly lost track of how long it took to create this! I wanted to encompass as many Bowser Castle themes as I could from the different Mario game. I also want to use authentic real props, tricks and action shots that I make without digitally adding them (with exception of the Mystery Boxes). So, it took a ton of brain storming, trial runs and experiments.

What made this episode so LONG to film was the fact that I didn’t have a good place to film it. So, I made my own! Fortunately, I had some backdrop cardboards that I got from SPIRIT Halloween that worked pretty well for it. The hard part was basically setting up, modifying and taking it down after every shot. Some of the set ups were a little complex so what would take me about 2 hours to film, usually amounted to 10-20 seconds of video on the actual episode.

There were several other filming challenges that were really fun to figure.

Fire Breathing
My most prized shot was Bowser breathing Fire! To accomplish this, I 3D printed Bowser, painted him, drilled a hole through his mouth out his back and threaded an Epidural needle through the hole I created (I’m an OB/GYN, so I have access to those). I then attached some IV tubing and pushed flammable liquid through the tubing. (Since there are kids watching this…I’m not going to say what liquid it was.)

Yoshi Sacrifice
I also wanted to recreate Mario’s “Yoshi sacrifice jump” that we are all guilty of…but flip it! Initially I set up two tracks that would get Yoshi to fall on top of Mario as he jumped up…but to get a controlled jump…it was impossible. So, I hot glued some Neodymium magnets to the sides of the cars. Then attached to cars through the cardboard backdrop to another magnet. Then using FaceTime I watched which trajectory looked best and traced it with a pencil. Yep, it was fake…but it was awesome!!

Lava
For the basic lava, I just got my Halloween lights and some LED string lights and covered theme with red silky sheets. But I also wanted to have an ERUPTION of lava. Initially I was going to try Elephant Toothpaste. I was able to get it to erupt and spray just the right height, but the issue was that the chemical reaction was TOO FAST. There was one point where I was trying to figure out how to load shaving cream into a 60cc syringe and as I was thinking, I took a drink of my Coke Zero and thought….MENTOS AND COKE! So I tested out a few different sodas and Fanta Orange seemed to work best to give the Lava effect. The trick was how to drop the mentos in without getting in the shot. That’s where I just threaded dental floss through them and released them from a distance. It took about about 12 Fanta Bottles and 5-6 packs of mentos to get the right shot.

Thwomps
The THWOMPs were really fun! I made those out of wood blocks and printed up and glued their faces on and attached them to a pole. Then just had to figure out the timing and getting the classic shake before the pound!

Bowser's Castle
Thanks to my little buddy Everett for lending me his Bowser's Castle. Fortunately two tracks fit perfectly through it and was able to set up some lighting and get my fog machine to create a really cool effect.

Also want to thank my buddy Coleman with Anderton Films for helping me with editing.
