Hello there, beautiful people!
I am Sasha with Fibers of Mine.
I am one of the teachers for Macrame for Beginners Group on Facebook.
  / macrameforbeginnerscom

If you are a beginner and not a member of the group, I suggest you check them out. You will find a lot of useful resources. A great supportive community, and a group of very talented teachers who will teach you all kinds of projects.

This video is meant for absolute beginners and beginners who might need clarification on some of the parts of this piece. I will show you how to tie the knots in each section so if you are familiar with the knots just skip to the part you are interested in.

I will be using my practice cords for demonstration purposes to show you the knots. You can refer to the photo of the final piece to create your own artwork. You can find it on my IG feed. @fibersofmine

0:43 - Materials
Let’s start with materials and measurements.
This piece is 48” wide and 36” long. (121.92 cm long and 91.44 cm wide)

Materials I used:
5mm natural 3ply twisted rope - cut to 120” (305 cm) or if you want longer fringe to 140" (355 cm) in length. You can get the rope from RightRope.com if you live in the US. I am not sure whether they ship to other countries.
Color single-strand cords for the middle section can be either 3mm or 4mm - cut 10 times or more the length of the color strip you want to make. The longer the color strip, the higher the multiplier.

You might need between 200 - 400 feet (61 - 122 meters) of each color cord. This will depend on the color (some colors you will need less then others), diameter or the cord, how long your color sections will be (mine was around 16-17 inches from dowel to dowel) and your personal style of knotting.

1 Thick 3/4" dowel (19 mm) - 48 inches in length
4 Thin 1/4" dowels (6.35 mm) - 48 inches in length

if you are interested in buying small amounts of color cord for your own projects, you can find different color variations sets in 100 feet (30 meters) spools in my shop. www.fibersofmine.com
However, please note that if you are planning to create a piece as large as this one, you will need more than 100 feet of color cords. Some colors you will use more than others, so plan according to your color design.

1:16 - Part 1

Top section.
Reverse larks head knots to attach your cord to the dowel and then a row of double half hitch knots tied over a thin dowel. I will show you how to tie these knots in this section.

5:35 - Part 2
Square knots.
I will show you how to tie a square knot in this section.
You can skip it if you know how to do this.
Here are few pieces of advice, however:
I suggest tying one row at a time to make the spacing nice and even.
When you tie your second, alternative row of two square knots on top of one another, do not pull too tight so your work doesn’t pull in the middle, and also tie one row at a time to make sure it’s even.

After this, you will have to create another row of DHH knots over another support dowel. I am not going over this part in the video, but you already know how to do it from the first part.

8:36 - Part 3
Adding color.
Measure 10 times the length of the color section you want to make.
It’s better to have more cord left than to run out right at the end.
You will need some cord left to tie the ends on the back.
I will show you how I did it in this section.
In my piece this section, between the DHH knots, measures 17".

After this, you will have to create another row of DHH knots over another support dowel. I am not going over this part in the video, but you already know how to do it from the first part.

12:59 - Part 4

Horizontal color lines
You can work straight from the spool of colored cord here with the method I will show you. So there is no need to estimate the length of the cord to cut.

15:56 - Conclusion
And there you have it!
I believe these are all of the important parts that you need for making your own piece.
I hope it will spark some ideas and you will add some of your own elements.
If I missed any of the questions you asked, please don’t hesitate to reach out, and will do my best to address them.

Happy Making and Thank You for Watching!
