U.S. commerce chief says recent request for chip companies to submit data was an ‘inevitable’ measure

Amid the ongoing chip crisis,... South Korea and the U.S. vowed to work together to stabilize supply issues.
According to Washington, the recent request for data from chip companies was an inevitable measure under unprecedented circumstances.

Seoul's Industry and Trade Minister Moon Sung-wook held a meeting with his U.S. counterpart Gina Raimondo in Washington D.C.,... where the two sides vowed to work together for the stabilization of global chip supply chains.
Their meeting on Tuesday U.S. local time... comes a day after Samsung Electronics and SK hynix submitted company trade data,... following a request from Washington.
In September, the U.S. Commerce Department asked for information from automakers, chip companies and others, saying the information would boost supply-chain transparency.
U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said that the request, made to South Korean and major global chipmakers was a "inevitable" measure,... under the "unprecedented" circumstances of a global supply shortage.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting,... Minister Moon said Raimondo expressed gratitude to South Korean firms for their cooperation.
He added that she vowed to strictly manage data, that includes operational secrets,... saying that she is well aware of recent concerns about possible information leaks.
At the meeting, he made it clear that the business information request would be a one-off... and said that the U.S. did not mention anything about additional information from South Korean firms.
He also said the two agreed to expand director-level bilateral dialogue for industry cooperation to a ministerial one.
During Minister Moon's three-day trip to the U.S., he is also scheduled to meet with U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm on Wednesday.
