Residents of Kosma Musalmeen village in UP’s Mainpuri district were shocked to discover 298 live turtles stuffed inside gunny bags in a mustard field. The turtles were seized by the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department and transferred to the Wildlife SOS facility for medical observation.

On being deemed fit by our veterinary team, the turtles were released in Sur Sarovar Bird Sanctuary in the presence of forest officials.

Poaching and illicit trafficking of turtles continue to be prevalent on account of various superstitious myths and beliefs attributed to them. Awareness regarding the illegality of the offence and the abominable treatment of these animals is incredibly important to curb cruelty and poaching of wildlife.
