Head of Royal Tichelaar Makkum, one of the oldest companies in the Netherlands and likely in operation since sometime in the 1500s, Jan Tichelaar has turned a company that had been on the decline in the 1990s into a once again thriving business. By offering designers the chance to work with traditional ceramics methods and reinterpret objects through projects like The Pyramids of Makkum (2008) he showed that even a 400-year-old company can remain relevant in the design landscape of today. Currently much of the company's time is spent producing tiles for architectural facades for clients like MVRDV.
