A DHL cargo plane skidded off the runway and split in half during an emergency landing in Costa Rica. Flight DO7216 had to return to Juan Santamaria airport in Costa Rica an hour into its journey towards Guatemala City.

The Boeing aircraft reportedly had issues with the hydraulic landing gear which triggered the captain to make the emergency landing.

Footage shows the DHL plane skidding on the tarmac while emitting thick white smoke. A sharp turn on the runway, caused it to skid off the tarmac and snap in two. The midsection of the plane was ripped open and collapsed to the ground.

In a statement, DHL said "the incident response team has been activated and an investigation will be conducted with the relevant authorities to determine what happened."

There were only two crew members onboard the Boeing aircraft at the time of the crash, both are reportedly unharmed.

Juan Santamaria airport was closed between 10.30am and 3.30pm that day following the incident, causing around 57 commercial and cargo flights and 8,500 passengers to be delayed and disrupted.
