Double Fatal Head-on Crash on Belt Parkway / Canarsie, Brooklyn

4.11.23 | by Adam | CANARSIE, Brooklyn -- A tragic wrong-way crash on the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn has claimed the lives of two drivers in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The westbound lanes of the parkway remain closed as investigators work to determine the cause of the accident.

According to officials, the crash occurred at approximately 1 a.m. near exit 13. A 52-year-old man was driving an SUV in the wrong direction, traveling east in the westbound lanes near exit 11. He reportedly side-swiped several vehicles before colliding head-on with a black Nissan being driven by a 79-year-old man near exit 13.

Both drivers were rushed to Brookdale Hospital, but unfortunately, they were pronounced dead upon arrival. The scene of the crash was described as loud and chaotic by witnesses.

"I'm not gonna lie, I didn't see it, the head-on collision, but from hearing it I knew it was crazy. So I automatically went to the terrace to see what it looked like, I was like damn," said a nearby resident.

The westbound lanes of the Belt Parkway remain closed at exit 13, causing disruptions for the morning commute as investigators continue to piece together how and why the SUV driver ended up traveling in the wrong direction. Police are also looking into whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

This tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers of wrong-way driving and the devastating consequences it can have. Authorities urge all motorists to remain vigilant, obey traffic laws, and stay alert while behind the wheel to prevent such accidents from occurring.
