The Birth of a Nation: Indonesia's struggle for Independence

Описание к видео The Birth of a Nation: Indonesia's struggle for Independence

What obstacles were encountered and how does a State achieve its independence and recognition in international law? What was the history of the critical years between 1945 and 1949?

This video discusses the Indonesian struggle for independence right from the declaration of independence in 1945 to the vigorous fight of the day in the Battle of Surabaya. It talks of the diplomacy of the Linggadjati Agreement and the pains of building the Republic in face of the First and Second Dutch Military Aggression. Discussing contentious issues and the ultimate recognition of sovereignty, the Renville Agreement and the Round Table Conference of 1949 are also adressed. In addition to that, my friend, a history enthusiast, gave his opinions and criticisms of the Renville Agreement as unjust, arguing it favored Dutch interests by stripping Indonesia of key territories. He saw it as a colonial tactic to suppress self-determination under the pretense of diplomacy.

For Indonesia, political struggle and military power, diplomacy, and foreign assistance are the not-so-easy way to freedom. The video also discusses what comes after independence – the challenge of building a united and an autochthonous country.

In addition to that, there are more insights with my fellow history enthusiast and friend Agava about the significance of key events in Indonesia's history between 1945 and 1950, including the Proclamation of Independence, the Revolutionary War, and the 1949 Hague Conference.
