Popular hair extensions may be exposing women to dozens of potentially dangerous chemicals, a new study warns.

Researchers say extensions are often treated to make them flame-resistant, waterproof, or antimicrobial.

They tested 43 popular products — both synthetic and human-hair styles — and identified 169 different chemicals.

The results: Nearly every sample contained at least one hazardous substance, including flame retardants, phthalates, pesticides, styrene, and more.

Previous studies have linked these chemicals to cancer, hormone disruption, reproductive and developmental issues, and immune disorders.

The researchers also identified 17 chemicals linked to breast cancer in 36 of the products.

And nearly 10% were found to contain toxic organotins, …some above health limits already set by the European Union.

Researchers say the findings are especially concerning for Black women, who use hair extensions far more often than other groups.

The authors add the results highlight the need for stronger oversight and clearer ingredient disclosure in a largely unregulated beauty market.
