The inverse square law does not apply to grow lights. For the inverse square law to work the radiation source must be a point or sphere and emit radiate evenly in all directions.
Fortunately LED grow lights have multiple sources when in the LED bar or 'Quantum board' setup and HID use reflectors which direct the light. We also tend to use reflective walls which redirect the light back towards the target. All in all it is a good thing grow lights do not conform to the Inverse Square law or we would be losing a lot of light.
