NASA is up to some really cool stuff with a moon rover called VIPER which is Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover. It's all about hunting for water ice on the moon's surface, and it's expected to launch on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, at the end of 2024.

To get ready for its big day, they've been doing some practice runs with a VIPER prototype at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston. They had this rover go down a ramp at different angles to simulate how it might leave its lander when it arrives at the lunar south pole.
NASA is pretty excited about this because VIPER's mission is super important. It's going to help figure out just how much water ice is hanging around near the moon's south pole in those areas that are always in shadow. They've seen hints of it in satellite images, but they need to send VIPER to check it out up close.

Now, here's the cool part: VIPER's work is going to pave the way for astronauts to go to the same region as part of the Artemis program. NASA's aiming to restart moon exploration with Artemis, and they even want to set up a permanent base at the moon's south pole. VIPER is like the scout, making sure there's enough water ice to support future missions.

Speaking of Artemis, it looks like astronauts might land there around 2025 or 2026. So, VIPER is like the advance team, getting everything ready for the big human mission.

But wait, there's more! NASA has this program called the Commercial Lunar Services Program (CLPS) where they're planning to send small robotic missions to different spots on the moon, not just the south pole. These missions could start happening as soon as this year, depending on how ready everything is.
