It’s 4AM, let’s go | Live Eurorack in the Kitchen

Switching it up with some down-tempo melodic techno thing. This song was abit of art therapy -- a melody that feels like a lullaby for grownups.

I struggled with performing this one, as slower tempo stuff I don't like how my breakdowns sound or feel. I'm sure with more modules I'd play around in this BPM more, but either way this one is vibe worth sharing. During the tinkering-phase of making this song my creative partner told me:

"You know when it's 4 AM and the night is the darkest, right before it feels like morning, and you are standing outside alone in the mist and the snow and it's quiet, and you are scared, but somehow kinda brave because you are still there, and you just know you are about to endeavor on the journey you are meant to take - that's what this sounds like."

I like that. Maybe it's the sound of hope? Wonder? Excitement for the unknown? Anyway it was fun to make.

Patch notes
Front and center for this jam is the Vostok Instruments Atlas quad filter. It's fantastic, and I continue to under utilize it. I love hitting the thing with too much gain and hearing warmth / distortion. The tingly voices being feed into are the Braids clone and 4MS Ensemble.

9:24 The Erica Synths Graphic VCO makes an appearance. It's so hard not to keep morphing and wringing weird new sounds out of it. While the lack of negative voltage is a constraint, the sounds one can find in it are incredibly fun.

Bass: Endorphin.es Godspeed and a 2HP kick module mixed via Bastl Buddy. I have a fun routing trick that let's me hit an octave higher note rhythmically via ALM Pam's. I didn't use the Pam's octave jumper too much on this track, but it's a thing I've spent a ton of time fine tuning I might share on the channel. The Godspeed is pretty great at making an angry bass sound, so it was fine trying to keep it calm for this vibe.

Drums: Endorphin.es Queen of Pentacles and some Erica Synths Sample Drum stuff. I've prepped and loaded a ton of my own samples into the QoP, but I can't remember if these are the default Endorphins sounds or my own. When I have more cash I definitely plan to change up my drum module set

Reverb/delay: I feel a little uncreative for how I'm under-utilizing my Happy Nerding FX Aid XL and the Intellijel Sealegs. They are both fantastic modules and I know I'll end up making more music simply because of them being so fun to touch. I do wish I had some better control of my gain staging with my current setup, since I sometimes hear noise or clipping because I'm hitting either effects send too hard. I'm still learning.

Utilities / mixing: After Late Audio's mixer system really changed what I was doing with my setup. Y'know, buying a mixer is kind of like buying new tires for your car -- it's not exciting, but you can really go far by doing it. Anyhow, I have a bunch of Instruo & Doepfer utilities scattered around my 12U setup, all of which I'm sure are being underused.

Sequencing: The VPME Euclidean Circles V2 is pretty key to part of my setup working with the Endorphin.es Ground Control, 2hp ARP, and the ALM Pam's Pro Workout. I totally want to make some changes to this part of the rack, but I'm a little locked in until the next case shows up!
