This beautiful northern black widow (Latrodectus variolus) will teach us about five different defense mechanisms ranging from her powerful venom to her ability to feign death (play dead) to her intimidating defensive posturing that looks like a nifty dance. Spiders have many clever ways of surviving!

Warning: Black widow venom can be deadly to humans. I am not advising anyone who lacks proper skill to handle these spiders.
