Venice's Ozone Avenue Sees Cleanup of Homeless Encampment

Описание к видео Venice's Ozone Avenue Sees Cleanup of Homeless Encampment

On Thursday, February 29, 2024, Venice witnessed a collaborative cleanup operation as the City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works and Clean Harbors Environmental Inc. came together to address homeless encampments.

In a move aimed at benefiting both the local community and individuals experiencing homelessness, a segment of Ozone Avenue in Venice was designated for a detailed cleanup. Workers donned protective hazardous materials suits for safety, following strict safety protocols throughout the process.

The operation was characterized by the synchronized efforts of two waste management teams. The Department of Public Works team, identifiable in yellow vests, and the Clean Harbors team, in orange vests, each took on roles that played to their strengths. The Clean Harbors team focused on sorting and safely disposing of hazardous waste, including batteries and syringes, while the Department of Public Works handled non-hazardous waste collection, ensuring the thorough cleaning of the area.

Supporting the cleanup, the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) provided outreach services, offering food, water, and hygiene kits to those affected by homelessness, demonstrating a holistic approach to the operation.

Los Angeles Police Officers were present to maintain safety and order, emphasizing the importance of cleanliness, hygiene, and adherence to safety measures, without enforcing Ordinance 41.18, which limits certain activities in public spaces.

While this operation on Ozone Avenue contributes to Los Angeles' wider strategy to combat homelessness, it represents only a part of the city's overall approach. Acknowledging the limitations of cleanup efforts alone, Los Angeles remains committed to developing sustainable solutions that address the underlying causes of homelessness and offer necessary support, reflecting a commitment to long-term change.
